Buying Your First GPS

March 19th, 2010

It seems like just about everyone has a GPS these days, everyone but you!  If you are interested in buying your first GPS you may find that the market is a bit intimidating.  There are a lot of really great products out there and you just may not be sure of what you need or even what you want!  Long gone are the days of the paper maps, now you can have your very own machine tell you how to get from point A to point B with relative ease!

Shopping for Your GPS

One of the first things you will notice when you start shopping for your GPS is the wide range in prices.  Today you can find models that start right around $100 and yet there are other models that cost $700 or more!  Which one is the right one for you, and how will you know it when you see it?

Which GPS is right for you really depends on what you will be using it for.  If you are looking for a GPS that will help guide you on short trips or will help get you around town occasionally you probably don’t need anything in the $700 range, in fact you will generally find that the units in the $200 to $300 range are suitable for you.  The point is, if you are not going to be taking long trips or using the system every day, a more expensive system won’t pay for itself.

If you work in sales or if you work with the deliveries of products you may need to get a GPS unit that is a bit more costly.  The reason is that the more costly units are able to help you with intricate directions and will provide a screen that will help you get from your starting point to your destination without any hiccups.

When you start comparing the features of each of the GPS units you will soon find that you are attracted to a certain quality unit.  Be sure to ask yourself if the amount of use that you will get out of the unit justifies its cost, if not you can probably scale back again and still get a really great product.  When shopping, be sure that you do shop around as prices can vary from retailer to retailer and your goal should always be to get the very best product for the most affordable price.

GPS Comparisons Are Different With Cheaper Devices

January 12th, 2010

While shopping for a GPS navigation system, a lot of people decide that they don’t need anything fancy. They would rather have a GPS that simply gives them reliable directions as opposed to something with all the latest gadgets and extras. Whether it’s an issue of affordability or just a lack of desire for something fancy, there are still plenty of options to choose from and the process of finding the right GPS can still be somewhat difficult. This article will go over all the basics when making GPS comparisons of affordable GPS navigation system and how this differs with higher end GPS comparisons.

Comparing affordable GPS models is drastically different than comparing newer, feature-filled models. With top-of-the-line GPS devices there are so many features out there and every model has such a unique combination of these features. There is so much to look at and compare. On the other hand, with basic GPS models things are, without a doubt, much simpler. Comparing basic GPS models primarily boils down to only two main things, navigation and reliability.

The more affordable GPS models are generally older and therefore have more dated processes of calculating routes (newer models still aren’t perfect at navigation but are generally better at it because of the newer technology). So when looking at affordable GPS models, it is important to see how good the navigation is. This is not to say that you won’t be able to get reliable navigation with an older model, there are plenty of affordable devices with very good navigation. It’s just the possibility that the navigation could be poor. And the navigation is the main purpose of a GPS, especially if you’re not going to buy something with too many features.

This brings to question how to find the device that will navigate well. One way to judge navigation is with a GPS comparison. Most GPS comparison charts usually have pros and cons that will make a note if the navigation is good and if a system has especially bad navigation it will most likely be noted. Looking at reviews is also very helpful. An important thing to keep in mind when reading reviews is to look at the overall reviews and don’t put too much weight on any single review. There is always going to be that one horrible review from someone that happens to live on the one street where the device has a glitch. Take specific reviews with a grain of salt.

Although affordable GPS devices might not have many features, they are still something to pay attention to but extra features should be considered as just that, extras. Although there might be a feature that you just must have, but are you willing to trade a bit of navigation reliability for it? Only you can answer this question, it is all part of shopping for a device and making these GPS comparisons.

GPS Comparison – How Comparisons Differ From GPS Ratings

November 8th, 2009

There are several websites and magazines devoted to comparing different consumer products so that people who are interested in buying something, has all the information and knowledge they need to make an informed purchase. GPS comparison is one such activity that helps the consumer before they purchase a GPS navigational system. Having the knowledge to make an informed decision is going to save you time and money when shopping for a GPS. And having someone else does the ‘legwork’ such as comparing the effectiveness or efficiency of the products is so helpful.

A review is a form of comparison for the GPS navigational systems. Some of these reviews are from paid writers of magazines and on-line e-zines or websites which compare and review several top brands of GPS navigational systems. They have put the products through several tests, such as real life usage. They programmed the GPS to take them some where and wrote about how well it did or did not perform, and then they did the same thing with another GPS navigational system and wrote a review about how that one performed. You then read both reviews and compare the outcome of each and decide which the better performer was for your money.

You may have to read several reviews and a comparison or two before you can make an informed decision on which GPS navigational system is right for you. One comparison will be more helpful than others; it all depends on the source and the reviewer or writer of the comparison. You want to find an unbiased opinion of each GPS you are considering purchasing so looking on the websites of the manufactures will not give you the unbiased GPS comparison you are looking for. Instead, go to websites and magazines that deal only with GPS navigational systems. And once a year the major consumer magazines come out with there ‘best of’ lists which are always helpful because you know they have thoroughly tested each of the top brand named GPS navigational systems and just report the conclusions, not their options.

In the end, if you are a more ‘hands on’ type of person, you might want to perform your own GPS comparison. You can do this by going into a local electronics store and, if left alone for a little while or if you prefer, have a salesperson help you, do some comparing of your own. Program a destination into two or three different GPS navigational systems and see which one has a clearer picture, better voice, clearer directions, and extra features and so on. Comparing prices would be the last thing after you narrow your search down to the best two for your needs.
