GPS Buyer’s Guide

For drivers in North America who are tired of staring at maps and pulling into gas stations to get directions the new technology of GPS may be the answer. GPS or Global Positioning Systems are an inexpensive and reliable way of finding your exact position on the globe at any given time. For the driver this can mean never having to look a road map again. This is a brief introduction to the major brands of GPS units and some information about each.

Garmin offers two different types of GPS units and many models for each type. The larger of the two the Streetpilot is meant to be mounted in your car and provides street to street directions map and much more useful information during you trip. Some of the more recent models of the Streetpilot offer voicecapabilities and will vocally give a driver directions. The Quest offer many of the same features as the Streetpilot but it comes in a smaller handheld size and is battery powered. The Quest may be a better option if you often find your self leaving the car behind and need directions on foot.

Magellan is one of the oldest consumer level GPS manufacturers and they are still one of the finest. The Roadmates line of GPS units have been around for a while and the newest models are still in competition for the highest in quality. The newest models of Roadmates provide turn by turn directions to your destination with its internal speaker. This line of GPS units are powered by the cars cigarette lighter and mounts easily to most automobiles. The Roadmate 800 provides color 3-D maps on its 3” screen.

The newest brand of GPS unit comes from Tom-Tom. The Tom-Tom Go700 provides directions on it’s 3.5” screen which gives its display in 3-D. The Go700 can give vocal directions in dozens of languages. The most interesting feature about this unit is it’s Bluetooth capability allowing it to connect to cell phones to give weather, traffic and road conditions for your trip.

Keeping Your Children Safe With GPS Personal Tracking

Each day it seems the news tells the sad story of a missing child and the heart rendering search for that child often leading to tragic results. New technology that uses a small GPS personal tracking device may be the answer to solving much of this problem. The new small devices can be worn as a pendant or on a belt like a small pager. The smaller size is ideal for younger children. The system uses a combination of cell phone and GPS technology to provide real time location information that is delivered to a cell phone, computer or email. The system can be programmed to report personal location information at timed intervals as short as 15 seconds. These personal tracking systems are ideal for dealing with child custody issues or with at risk children.

GPS Personal tracking information shows not only location but speed and direction of travel. The system also can be programmed to give you a warning when a child travels out of bounds such as leaving the neighborhood or leaving school early. Being able to log into your computer at any time of day and confirm the location of your child will reduce your stress and increase your family’s security. Some units even have a panic button on the unit that the child can activate in case of any emergency. The notification goes not only to you but to the GPS tracking company that is providing your service. They in turn can notify local authorities or even attempt to call the child on a cell phone to ascertain the type of emergency. The local authorities will know exactly where your child is to within a few meters speeding emergency response time. If your child is abducted most likely the perpetrator will quickly discard the child’s cell phone reducing the chance that they can be tracked. However if your child has a small GPS personal tracking device on them their location will still be transmitted to you and the authorities. All of which increases the chance that your child will be found safely.

For preadolescent children GPS personal tracking devices are as small a phone pager (2.5″X 1″X 1.7″ inches) and will run on small AA or AAA batteries for up to 24 hours before needing a recharge. Slightly larger units that can be placed in special clothing pockets or backpacks will continue to transmit on GSM cell phone frequencies for up to two weeks before needing a recharge. If your child is old enough to drive a back up tracking system can be installed in their vehicle to provide information on driving habits and travel locations. All of which provides a parent with peace of mind.

Personal tracking devices are not cheap and generally the smaller the device the more expensive it becomes. However it is hard to put a price on the safety of your child and your sense security. In addition the GPS carrier that provides the tracking and notification services will charge you a monthly fee usually around $100.00. In this day and time each of us must choose what level of safety and security they can live with. The risk level can be managed through the use of a modern technology in the form of a GPS personal tracking device.

Using GPS Vehicle Tracking Devices

It is estimated that it cost about $500 a day to put a delivery or service vehicle on the road. If you are a business that depends on these resources you know how hard it is to manage them effectively. The advent of sophisticated and smaller GPS vehicle tracking devices now allows every fleet manager to efficiently manage their resources. Many companies have realized tremendous savings as a result of employing this technology.

Private citizens are also utilizing the new technology as well. If you own more than one automobile, boat, motorcycle, travel trailer or motor home know exactly where they are is important. In addition if you have young drivers within your house hold you will sleep easier knowing that you can at anytime find your child and your vehicle. In addition you can monitor their driving habits in order to keep them safe while on the road. The liability of owning a vehicle that is being driven by a teenager can be serious in this litigious society. The use of GPS vehicle tracking devices that feature real time uploads will go a long way in preventing any serious problems to your financial well being.

The laws concerning the use of GPS vehicle tracking devices vary from state to state. It is generally accepted that you are legally able to place a tracking device on any vehicle that you own as either and individual or a business. Placing a tracking device on a vehicle that is not under your legal ownership or control is generally considered to be illegal in most circumstances. Penalties for violating privacy laws in some circumstance can lead to serious fines and even incarceration. Many businesses and private individuals have ignored these laws because it is relatively hard to detect GPS vehicle tracking devices. Business that seek trade secrets or information that will give them a competitive edge frequently conducts illegal tracking activities. The very small size of the new real time GPS tracking devices makes it very easy to place a device just about anywhere on a vehicle.

In the same venue individuals also are violating the law by placing tracking devices on the vehicles of ex-spouses, girl or boyfriends. In addition there are several cases where stalkers have also used the technology to keep track of their victims. Many people think it is impossible catch someone doing illegal surveillance tracking but they are mistaken. Technology that detects cell phone transmissions can easily detect the tracking device uploads to the GPS service company that provides the tracking information you are receiving. Again this is a violation of the law use GPS vehicle tracking devices to track another private citizen. It is just not worth the risk.
