What is the Best Portable GPS System?

November 16th, 2009

For some, GPS systems are not limited to the car dashboard or even on the steering console of the boat. But rather carried with them wherever they go! GPS manufacturers have taken notice of how popular their systems are with avid outdoors men and nature enthusiasts and have focused on developing many rugged, durable and water-resistant handheld portable GPS tools.

When it comes to which brand makes the best portable GPS system, the jury is still out. However, one of the most popular portable GPS systems is made by Magellan. Though they are not the most familiar name in GPS technology, Magellan has held their own in the industry for some time. For those who love the outdoors and have a larger then average budget, portable GPS systems don’t get much better then the Triton 2000.

The Triton 2000 includes seemingly endless functions. Some of the most important being a wide variety of built in maps, an easy-to-read compass function, voice recorder and handy flashlight. Due to the fact that the Triton 2000 was designed for the outdoorsmen, it is designed to be quite a bit more durable then other GPS systems, and is completely waterproof as opposed to water resistant.

For those who like to take their adventures and discoveries one step further, the Triton also offers the ability to upload topographical maps, marine cartography and even National Geographic TOPO!

However, it is also important to mention that the Triton 2000 is by no means inexpensive. Most retailers will mark this handy tool at around $499.99, making it one of the most expensive portable GPS available. When compared to other GPS suppliers such as Garmin or TomTom, the Magellan Triton 2000 may seem steep for the functions offered.

But it is important to remember, when purchasing a portable GPS to take while camping, hiking or rock-climbing it is vital to purchase a product that is as rough as the terrain! There is little point in buying a less expensive system, just to purchase a second when it breaks or becomes damaged by water!

GPS Systems 101

November 1st, 2009

When you are considering which GPS system to purchase, there are several things you need to look out for and know about. The first thing to think about is what type of GPS (global positioning system) you require – do you need a car GPS, or do you simply want one of the best GPS systems available? Do you want a boat navigation system? Do you need a mobile GPS system or a fixed one? For example, the Magellan GPS Roadmate 700 gives you voice and visual directions, so with this global positioning system you really can’t get lost. What’s more, this GPS system has a touch screen, and an auto-complete feature for when you’re entering addresses, meaning no more misspelled addresses or suburbs. While we’re speaking about addresses, you can create an address book you’re your favorite or popular destinations. This Magellan GPS system really has it all!

Another one of the great GPS systems is the Magellan Roadmate 2000 GPS auto navigation system. This car GPS system boasts over 1.3 million pre-programmed points of interest, and has a function that helps you avoid traffic! Use global positioning to not only work your way through the city streets, but in the quickest and least stressful way (although, we can’t help with the husband or wife’s backseat driving)!

But not only can you purchase the best GPS systems to help you get around town – you can also use them as a GPS auto tracking system, for those of you who truly value your automobile and can’t bear the thought of anything happening to it. With a GPS system tracking your car, if the worst happens and your car does actually get stolen, the global positioning system can be followed to wherever the suspects might take it – or it can be intercepted by the Police before real harm comes to it! No more worrying about where you car will end up if it is stolen!

Mobile global positioning can also help with keeping track of wayward teens who borrow your car – no more do you have to worry about where your son or daughter has taken your car, you can simply keep track of it via the global positioning devices you have installed (and your children don’t even have to know the GPS system is in your car!). Plus there is the added benefit that the GPS system will help your children get from A to B, and not get lost in between – very important for any parent!

GPS solutions are many and varied, so before you go out and consider all the GPS systems, have a think about why you want it (keep track of your beloved vehicle, or monitor your son who just got his license and a new girlfriend?) and for what vehicle – boat, car, bike or something more adventurous! Your global positioning system is an investment for many reasons, so do your research and don’t make a decision you’ll regret.

How to Save Money on Auto GPS Units!

October 14th, 2009

Although prices on auto GPS units have fallen quite a bit lately, there are still ways to save money when you buy one. And since you can spend anywhere from $150 to $900 on a GPS, saving money is a good thing to do.

Perhaps the most important money saving tip is for you to understand the marketplace before you buy.

A lot of people just read reviews or talk with friends and say “I’ll buy that one,” only to find out that the one they bought was not what they would have wanted.

It helps to have a basic idea of what you want your GPS to do.

They all show you where you are and give you directions to get to where your going. They all also have a database of pre-programmed destinations called Points of Interest, or POI’s. You can get an auto GPS unit to do all of this and more for only $150! The Garmin nuvi 200, the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, and the Magellan Maestro 3100 are all three good choices of basic GPS systems.

Some popular features are more extensive maps, actually saying street names with the directions, real-time traffic bulletins, and Bluetooth capability, to name only a few.

You can get all of this for $200! The Garmin nuvi 350 is a great example. It can do this and more.

Another example of a great mid-priced GPS is the Magellan Maestro 4250. It can do everything I’ve mentioned and it has the wider, 4.3-inch screen. (Normal screen sizes are 3.5-inches. These are all measured on the diagonal, just like a television.)

Yet another auto GPS unit you need to be thinking about is the Tom Tom GO 920T. At around $400, the GO 920T can do everything mentioned thus far, and also it has a few features that only Tom Tom offers–such as their Map Share technology. Map Share lets users actually enter information into Tom Tom’s map database that reflects current road conditions.

Personally, I really like the Garmin nuvi 760! It was voted by Consumer Reports as the best overall GPS unit. At less than $400, it can do everything we’ve talked about and also has multiple point routing. Multiple point routing lets you enter more than one destination into your device. The device will plot the best route to include all of your stops! For some people this is extremely handy.

While we’re mentioning extra features, let me make sure you know about Magellan’s deal with AAA. If you’re a AAA subscriber, you can get access to their well-known Tour Book right on your GPS device. I love AAA. So, for me this would certainly be a good selling feature.

As you can see, there are auto GPS units to fit all budgets and needs.

Your best money saving tip would be to get on an informative website where you can check out prices and browse particular models. That way you’ll really know what you’re buying when you decide to spend your money!
