In a recent news story, police were able to apprehend a criminal who stole a van because the van was equipped with a GPS tracking device.

A felon spotted a van that was property of a county in New York state and hopped in for a ride. As you probably know some crimes are planned, but many are simply crimes of opportunity. An idling van, an open door…these are the kinds of temptations that criminals find hard to resist.

The employee who had been entrusted with the van was quick to alert his employer and they in turn called the police. Because of the GPS tracking device inside, the police were able to find the van outside of a fast food restaurant. Without the GPS tracking device, who can say how long it would have taken for them to find the vehicle? It surely wasn’t the only county-owned van on the streets. So police would have had to be on the lookout for both the van, not really knowing exactly where it was or who was driving it. A detective in an unmarked car attempted to get the suspect to end his joy ride. The suspect left the vehicle and made a run for it.

Eventually the van thief, someone who had been arrested 17 times in the past, was apprehended.

There is another side to this story though-what about the employees who left the car running and accessible to an opportunistic thief? We didn’t get to read about the end of that person’s story. I’m sure the county was glad that this employee came forward quickly and did not try to hide the theft.

As great as GPS technology is and as much as it can do to help make things more efficient, it doesn’t beat old-fashioned common sense. Most employers would prefer of their employees didn’t leave company vehicles idling, but having a GPS tracking device can add an extra layer of security in the event that something like this does happen.

By: Nancy McCord

In the world of GPS tracking, there are two types of products that you can choose for. These two types do have their own advantages and disadvantages, but they can be more efficient to certain needs and wants. You should understand that there are passive and active GPS trackers, complete with their distinct features and benefits. In order to be able to choose the right type to suit your needs, we are going to discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages in this article.

The first type of GPS tracker is the passive one. This passive device don’t give you the luxury of being able to monitor movements and the locations of subjects you are tracking on a real-time basis. You can still attach the device to the subject you are tracking and then take it back later to get a map of their travels. You will be able to download the travel log data from the passive GPS device and use the given software to interpret the data into readable map locations. You can see routes taken, stops made, and various other data once you downloaded the data from the device. If you plan on tracking the subject again, all you have to do is put — or give — the device back to the subject to let it records travel data. However, passive devices and solutions are far cheaper than active ones. You don’t have to pay monthly service charge to use passive GPS tracking solutions; just purchase the solution from a reliable source and you can use it for as long as you need.

Active devices, on the other hand, enable you to track movements and locations of the subject being monitored in real-time. The best way to go is to choose an active solution with web-based tracking interface and reliable map sources, because then you will be able to track the subject from anywhere as long as you have internet connection. These active trackers have GPRS module built-in to allow it to actively transmit movement data to a server; this is why you can track the subject as long as they are within GSM coverage area. Active solutions are great if you are monitoring children or elders as well, because the tracking device is small and compact — some provider also offer wrist-watch GPS tracking devices so it is very easy to use to track people — and very reliable. It is designed with enhanced sensitivity to allow you to track subjects even when they are indoor. The downside of active solution is that it cost more than passive ones. You will have to pay a certain amount of monthly service charge to be able to use the service to track on your subjects in real-time. Still, the cost you have to pay for these services is quite affordable and with the benefits active GPS tracking solution brings the price is very much worth it.

By: Alice Douglas

If you are among the tens of thousands of people who get pleasure from hiking then you ought not to leave home without the proper equipment and that means water, food, a basic first aid kit and the best GPS hiking system you can find. Taking a hike in the woods, or in one of the many lovely state parks, can be very exciting and you will enjoy a lot of exercise and see many animals and plants that you may not get to see at any other time. However, if you manage to get yourself lost while you are out hiking, especially if you get injured at the same time, your lovely day could well turn out very differently to the day that you planned. This is why taking a GPS tracking device is vital as it can help to get you back on track and home again safely.

Should you suddenly discover that you are lost when you are out hiking you easily can program your GPS device to find out the direction you are heading and this will stop you from accidentally heading the wrong way. Then, once you have regained your bearings, you can also find your way out of the woods and will find that many state parks have rest areas and other similar places that can be used as landmarks. Even when you are unable to find your way out using the GPS system then usually rescue units will be able to find you simply by tracking your signal.

If you are out hiking alone and have taken a GPS system for emergencies then you can also use it to indicate how far you have walked. By keeping track of the distance you travel you will then be able to find your way back onto the proper path by merely retracing your steps and will know exactly how far you must travel to return to your starting point. As a consequence you will not simply be walking for miles speculating about just how far you need to go before you get back on track. In addition it is an excellent way to make sure that you do not travel too far in the first place and will often stop you from ending up lost at all.

Anybody who has ever found themselves lost in the woods will know that it can be a frightening experience and the ability to know where you are and how you can get out again will help in keeping you and the remainder of your group calm. You will find that you can find significant areas and landmarks using your GPS system. Just as importantly, having calculated how far you want to walk during the day, your GPS system can indicate when you have reached your goal and stop you from going too far which could be dangerous. Knowing when to stop is very important and can help you to stay healthy and avoid injury to your body.

Going for a hike alone is not recommended but if you want to set off alone remember to carry your GPS so that you will feel safe and you will be ready in case of an emergency. Lastly, do not forget to tell someone where you are planning to go and when you expect to be back so that they can alert the rescue teams if you fail to return when expected.

By: Donald Saunders

If you’re like me, choosing the right GPS receiver is a little daunting. What helps is a good GPS reviews comparison, where you can learn what various models do and how much they cost. In other words, you need a guide!

Choosing the right GPS device is critical. Prices have dropped over the past two years, and you can probably get a model with more bells and whistles than you think you can. To help you form your game plan, let’s first talk about who the main manufacturers are, then what various models do and how much they cost.

There are a number of companies that make GPS receivers, but the big three are Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan. Garmin is the industry leader with by far the most market share, and also a much broader range of products than anyone else.

Magellan actually was one of the first companies to make these nifty little devices. They were essentially the pioneer. And Tom Tom is the new arrival. Although new, Tom Tom has made great inroads on the market shares of the more established companies by offering great products at great prices.

Any good GPS reviews comparison should tell you what you can expect to buy. So, let’s run over the basic features that you’ll get with any GPS receiver.

All GPS receivers have a touch screen interface, maps of the lower 48 states, and a database of Points of Interest (POIs). All receivers also calculate the best route from where you are to where you want to go, and they give you directions via spoken voice prompts.

The base models of either Garmin, Tom Tom, or Magellan will do all of this and more.

For around $150 you can get the Garmin nuvi 200, the Tom Tom One, or the Magellan Maestro 3100. These three models all cover the basic features I mentioned.

What if you want more? How much is that going to cost?

Well, let’s run over what more you can get.

Upgrades are: more maps (Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Europe, Mexico), bigger screen, Bluetooth, real-time traffic and weather, many more POIs (how about 6 million!), and multiple routing.

You can get most of this stuff for $350! For instance, the Garmin 660 can do all of the above except the multi-route calculations. It sells for slightly under $350.

Magellan’s Maestro 4250 is a direct competitor and can do essentially what the Garmin 660 can. The 4250 is currently selling for slightly more than $250.

Tom Tom’s comparable receiver would be the Tom Tom Go 720, which is currently selling for less than $350.

Of course, you might be willing to spend more!

As you go higher in price, each of these companies offers great proprietary features. Magellan has a deal with AAA, for instance, to include their Tour Book right in the device. (For AAA members only.)

A good GPS reviews comparison can only do so much, however.

Now you need to actually get on an informative website and start browsing.

By: Lee Cole

It seems that almost everyone has heard of GPS (Global Positioning System) in one form or another. The most well known GPS device is the car navigation system that shows and tells the driver through voice commands how to get to their desired pre-programmed destination. But if you’re wondering how these little technological wonders work then you’ve come to the right place.

A GPS receiver is an electronic device that uses the Global Positioning System to determine its exact location on earth with pin-point accuracy. This system is made up of the three parts; 27 satellites that send out continuous positioning signals, ground stations around the world that help synchronize the satellites, and various types of GPS receivers.

In this article we’re going to concentrate on how a GPS receiver works within this system since it’s the piece of the GPS puzzle that keeps you from getting lost. Its main function is to calculate its position on the earth using the signals that it receives from the satellite system.

To do this the receiver needs to lock onto the signals of at least 3 satellites. Once 3 or more satellites have been detected it then needs to determine the distance between the satellites and the distance between itself and each satellite. It then uses the basic math principles of triangulation or trilateration to compute its location on the earth’s surface.

The signals a GPS receiver uses to figure its location are radio signals transmitted by the satellites. These radio signals have three bits of information embedded in them; ephemeris data, almanac data, and a pseudorandom code. Using this information the GPS unit is able to triangulate its position and report that back to its user.

Accuracy is another question many first time users wonder about. The good news is GPS receivers are very accurate with the ability to pin-point your location to within a radius of 20 meters. There are ways to increase accuracy through the use of DGPS (Differential GPS) and WAAS (Wide Are Augmentation System) which can get within 3 meters of accuracy. Units with these two features normally cost more but the increase in accuracy can be well worth the cost.

There are many factors that can and do affect how accurately a GPS unit reports its position. These include:

1. The number of visible satellites
2. Signal delays caused as they pass through the earths atmosphere
3. Signals bouncing off of objects
4. Inaccurate clock in the GPS unit
5. Ephemeris errors
6. Satellites in poor positions
7. Satellite signals that are blocked because of terrain or manmade features

GPS is a great technology that has found its way into many everyday applications. Depending on your needs for keeping track of where you are there is sure to be a GPS receiver that fits the bill.

By: Andrew Bicknell

For drivers in North America who are tired of staring at maps and pulling into gas stations to get directions the new technology of GPS may be the answer. GPS or Global Positioning Systems are an inexpensive and reliable way of finding your exact position on the globe at any given time. For the driver this can mean never having to look a road map again. This is a brief introduction to the major brands of GPS units and some information about each.

Garmin offers two different types of GPS units and many models for each type. The larger of the two the Streetpilot is meant to be mounted in your car and provides street to street directions map and much more useful information during you trip. Some of the more recent models of the Streetpilot offer voicecapabilities and will vocally give a driver directions. The Quest offer many of the same features as the Streetpilot but it comes in a smaller handheld size and is battery powered. The Quest may be a better option if you often find your self leaving the car behind and need directions on foot.

Magellan is one of the oldest consumer level GPS manufacturers and they are still one of the finest. The Roadmates line of GPS units have been around for a while and the newest models are still in competition for the highest in quality. The newest models of Roadmates provide turn by turn directions to your destination with its internal speaker. This line of GPS units are powered by the cars cigarette lighter and mounts easily to most automobiles. The Roadmate 800 provides color 3-D maps on its 3” screen.

The newest brand of GPS unit comes from Tom-Tom. The Tom-Tom Go700 provides directions on it’s 3.5” screen which gives its display in 3-D. The Go700 can give vocal directions in dozens of languages. The most interesting feature about this unit is it’s Bluetooth capability allowing it to connect to cell phones to give weather, traffic and road conditions for your trip.

By: David Stone

It seems like just about everyone has a GPS these days, everyone but you! If you are interested in buying your first GPS you may find that the market is a bit intimidating. There are a lot of really great products out there and you just may not be sure of what you need or even what you want! Long gone are the days of the paper maps, now you can have your very own machine tell you how to get from point A to point B with relative ease!

Shopping for Your GPS

One of the first things you will notice when you start shopping for your GPS is the wide range in prices. Today you can find models that start right around $100 and yet there are other models that cost $700 or more! Which one is the right one for you, and how will you know it when you see it?

Which GPS is right for you really depends on what you will be using it for. If you are looking for a GPS that will help guide you on short trips or will help get you around town occasionally you probably don’t need anything in the $700 range, in fact you will generally find that the units in the $200 to $300 range are suitable for you. The point is, if you are not going to be taking long trips or using the system every day, a more expensive system won’t pay for itself.

If you work in sales or if you work with the deliveries of products you may need to get a GPS unit that is a bit more costly. The reason is that the more costly units are able to help you with intricate directions and will provide a screen that will help you get from your starting point to your destination without any hiccups.

When you start comparing the features of each of the GPS units you will soon find that you are attracted to a certain quality unit. Be sure to ask yourself if the amount of use that you will get out of the unit justifies its cost, if not you can probably scale back again and still get a really great product. When shopping, be sure that you do shop around as prices can vary from retailer to retailer and your goal should always be to get the very best product for the most affordable price.

By: Heather Jacobson

Businesses are saving thousands of dollars per month with GPS vehicle tracking devices.

“Businesses have reported a reduction in fuel usage as the biggest advantage of GPS tracking,” said Brad Borst, Founder and President of RMT. Monitoring and reducing speeds, routes, and idle time are just a few things that fleet owners can do to lower the fuel bill. Each mile per hour above 50 MPH increases fuel consumption by 1 ½ percent. Higher speeds also cause more tire heat, which puts more wear on tires. Wear on tires will almost double at road speeds of 70 MPH or greater. RMT’s GPS tracking systems report all vehicle activity and immediately alerts fleet managers by cell phone and email of speeding and unauthorized use of company vehicles.

Business owners are most concerned with fuel & maintenance, employee overtime, and employee productivity. New GPS technology significantly reducing excess costs for businesses:

1.	Fuel & Maintenance – The average operating cost per vehicle is about $1.50 per mile. A company can reduce at least 25 miles per week for each vehicle with a GPS tracking device.

2.	Employee Overtime – The employee overtime rate is estimated at about $30 per hour. On average, a company can reduce at least 1 hour of overtime per week with a GPS fleet tracking system.

3.	Employee Productivity – On average, each vehicle could complete at lease 1 extra stop, job, or delivery per week with a live GPS tracking unit.
For an average size fleet of 10 vehicles, this means an estimated monthly savings of over $6000 with RMT’s GPS tracking solution.

A new Mileage (odometer) tracking feature for the Discovery LITE GPS fleet tracking system. The mileage tracking will allow fleet managers to observe vehicle performance and maintenance from the convenience of their computer. RMT expects to offer the mileage tracking to its thousands of customers by the end of the month.

By: Brad Borst

Garmin is one of the top manufacturers of global positioning systems in the United States. They offer a host of products from GPS navigational product for cars, boats and motorcycles to aviation and boats. There goal is to enrich the lives of their customers through the products of navigational equipment.

Beginning with GPS units for vehicles, Garmin began using the power of the 24 satellites circling 12,000 feet above us back in 1989 when the company started making GPS navigational systems for people and their cars. Today they are making the same product, only better. Garmin has kept up with the times and increase their products as the times called for them. Today they offer the vehicle GPS navigational unit, as well as the GPS for boats and airplanes and hikers and bicycle enthusiasts.

Garmin makes a remarkable assortment of GPS navigational units for every kind of moving vehicle and person. Today they put GPS navigation equipment in personal assistant machines which is a small travel aide; a cell phone and your computer. With the personal assistant, you can download your destination and the personal assistant will ‘walk’ you to your destination or as you are driving, give you turn-by-turn directions to get to where you are going. The cell phone is similar in that you download your information and the voice will guide you to your destination using a map of where you are now and an arrow following you as you walk to where you would like to be. And lastly we have the computer or laptop which can be used as a GPS navigational system by itself after you have downloaded the information.

Other Garmin GPS units include those for aviation use complete with longitude and altitude and the same is programmed into the marine GPS units. Some of these units are portable and can help you get around the city or town without your car and help you find restaurants, places of interest (POI) such as parks or ATM machines; they can also help you find an address you’ve never been to before. Besides aviation use, Garmin makes GPS units for marine usage as well. Being able to see the bottom of the lake or river or ocean in clear form is something fishermen have been waiting a long time for. Now they can tell a fish from a rock and discover where all the fish hang out and with the routing feature on the GPS, keep going back to the same spot over and over again.

Garmin GPS units can be found through their website or on other websites throughout the Internet. They can also be purchased at electronic stores and large discount stores for cheaper than the official website address has them. Discounted Garmin’s would be found on the Internet, be buyer beware, sometimes people are selling ‘refurbished’ or ‘reconditioned’ Garmin GPS units and if that is not what you want, you should ask if it is a new unit or ‘re – done’ unit.

By: Charlie Lee
